News You Can Use

Have you ever wondered if learning CPR can really save a life? Have you ever wondered why it is important to take a CPR class? Have you ever wondered how becoming a CPR Safe school or facility can truly make a difference? Here are just a few examples.

-Surviving Cardiac Arrest Depends on Your Location
A person's chances of surviving a cardiac arrest depend largely on the neighborhood in which they collapse, a new study suggests. Please read the following article to see why.

Saving Lives!!! CPR For All Physical Education Students
CPR/First Aid has been an option in the Physical Education curriculum for many years. Several students in the past have elected to earn their certification for baby sitting services, summer jobs at Water Country and a variety of other reasons. Four years ago, we decided as a department CPR training with the opportunity for certification should be experienced by all students. As of this year with the completion of our CPR/First Aid unit in December, all students’ grades nine through twelve have participated in CPR training. Through the assistance of Nathan Duclos and Sean Madden from McGregor Memorial EMS in Durham and our school nurse Danuta Richards we have successfully provided certification with cards to a large majority of students with no fee. We are proud of our students and the success rate for certifications earned and more so to have heard a few great stories about our students applying their CPR skills outside of school. We believe our students will continue to demonstrate the confidence to do the best they can to help those in need.

Do you have an AED in your school? That is a wonderful step towards your school becoming a CPR Safe certified school. However, having an AED requires that you have an established maintenance plan in place. We can help you with getting an AED and replacement pads and batteries, setting up a response plan, and establishing a maintenance schedule ( click here to download the CPR Safe AED Checklist). Follow this link to see why having a plan is so very important.

Recently we had an emergency call that may inspire you. It was for a 17 yo female who was choking on a piece of steak. By the time we got there, her younger brother had done abdominal thrusts on her and she had coughed up the meat. The brother had recently taken a CPR class at Oyster River (where he is a student) from his PE teacher, which is where he had learned the maneuver. Just wanted to let you know that you really have no idea where the seeds you plant from teaching and organizing CPR classes will spread and the good you will do. Count this as one life you have helped to save!
