What is the CPR Safe™ Program?

The CPR Safe program is designed to promote CPR and AED training and preparedness in your school and to help you as you work to meet the requirements of the New Hampshire school CPR and First Aid law. As a non-profit based public health education program, CPR Safe is a school-friendly project that works to attain the following three goals in every NH school:

  1. The school has made child health and safety a priority through staff professional development, day to day operations, student wellness education, and CPR certifications.
  2. At least 75% of the school staff is certified in Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and has been trained in the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
  3. The school is equipped with an AED which is easily accessible to all.

McGregor Memorial EMS will certify schools meeting these criteria as CPR Safe Schools. In conjunction with the NH Department of Education the CPR Safe certification recognizes a school’s commitment to children's health and safety and ultimately makes the school and community a safer place for all.

Are you affiliated with any national CPR organizations?

We are an official American Heart Association training center, however we operate as an independent, volunteer, non-profit educational institution. What this means is that the CPR and AED training you receive is provided by professional EMT’s who are working in your communities. Every certification we issue is for 2 years.

What does the CPR Safe certification mean for my school?

First and foremost, becoming certified in CPR and AED will save lives. Sudden cardiac arrest is just that, sudden. By working towards the CPR Safe certification you will ensure that CPR and AED trained staff are available to all students and staff should an emergency arise. Attaining the CPR Safe certification lets students, parents, and your community know that you have made school health and safety a priority. The CPR Safe certification ensures a safer school environment for all.

I would like to become an instructor so I can help teach our school staff. Can you help me with this?

Part of the CPR Safe program is to empower you to become a CPR Safe program educator. Through our affiliation with the American Heart Association (AHA) we hold regular instructor classes designed for educators who are interested in becoming CPR instructors. This program will certify you to teach successful CPR and AED certification classes for your school staff.

Working with your school and/or school district we will help you attain the staff CPR certification necessary to make a true community health impact. We have the instructors to certify your entire staff at once allowing you to attain CPR Safe certification as soon as possible. Once you become an instructor affiliated with our training center you will be able to re-certify your own school staff on a regular basis, on your own schedule, so as to keep their CPR training current. We will manage all of the paperwork as well as the AHA registrations.

What is the cost of the CPR Safe Program?

There is no cost for either establishing the CPR Safe program in your school or for the certification that accompanies it. The only cost that will be incurred is for the expenses associated with the actual CPR instruction.

What is the cost for CPR instruction?

AHA Heartsaver CPR and AED instruction, which provides you with a 2 year certification, costs $60 per person. Many people feel that this cost is more than many other organizations, however the AHA certification is for 2 years, meaning the cost is only $30 per year, half the cost of traditional CPR training. If you eve have any questions about the cost of the training please contact the CPR Manager.

The training cost covers materials used during the class, instructor time, and certification cards. We work with you to ensure that classes are affordable as well as to find alternative sources of funding for this training; health insurance, grants and existing wellness budgets generally cover the minimal costs involved.

I heard my insurance will pay for the class. Is this true?

Many insurance companies will reimburse you for the cost of CPR and AED instruction. We have extensive experience in working with insurance companies and will coordinate all of the necessary paperwork for you and/or your school. Please contact the CPR Manager for more information.

What is an AED?

An Automated External Defibrillator is a device which, when used in conjunction with CPR, provides the best chance of surviving cardiac arrest. The AED delivers an electric shock to heart in hopes of re-establishing a normal heartbeat.

We have an AED, isn't that enough?

AED's are miraculous devices that have offered the hope of saving lives. However, an AED by itself is of limited use unless someone is available who has been trained in CPR and the use of the AED. Even AED's require training in CPR to be effective

Our nurse/athletic department has training, doesn't that cover us?

While we are glad that there are CPR and AED trained staff at your school, having only a few individuals trained in those life saving procedures is not enough. Sudden cardiac arrest, the condition that requires the need for CPR and an AED is just that sudden; it can happen anytime, to anyone, anywhere. This includes students as well as faculty, staff, and community members. The more people who know CPR, the safer your school and your community will be.

Apart from this the New Hampshire Department of Education recommends that as many people as possible become CPR and AED certified. This recommendation stems from the new law requiring that a CPR and AED trained school staff member be available at all times to all students.

What are the new regulations regarding CPR in schools?

Do you teach child and adult CPR?

You will become certified in infant, child, and adult CPR and AED. You will also learn about choking in those same populations as well as the signs/symptoms and treatment of stroke and heart attack.

Do you teach First Aid?

Yes. We can provide you with First Aid instruction that will certify you for 2 years.

Does my whole school/district have to be trained all at once?

No. We will work with you to create a training program that addresses your specific goals and needs. While we can teach very large groups in a single training, we can also hold smaller classes if that works better for you. The goal of the CPR Safe program is to work towards 100% staff certification; how you get there is up to you.

If I learn CPR do I have to use it?

You will never be required to perform CPR if you do not wish to. Our CPR classes are taught in such as way as to help you to feel comfortable with this lifesaving skill. Our instructors will work with every student to foster confidence in themselves so that should the need arise; our goal is to ensure that every CPR certified student feels empowered to help.

If I do perform CPR can I be sued if something goes wrong?

If you perform CPR and use an AED to the best of your ability and within the scope of your training you are safe from prosecution. In fact, NH, as in many other states, has Good Samaritan laws that will protect you from liability.

Under New Hampshire Statutes, you are protected from liability if you should render assistance at an accident scene.

Section 508:12
508:12 Aid at Scene of Emergency or to Victim of Crime
I. If any person in good faith renders emergency care at the place of the happening of an emergency or to a victim of a crime or delinquent act or while in transit in an ambulance or rescue vehicle, to a person who is in urgent need of care as a result of the emergency or crime or a delinquent act, and if the acts of care are made in good faith and without willful or wanton negligence, the person who renders the care is not liable in civil damages for his acts or omissions in rendering the care, as long as he receives no direct compensation for the care from or on behalf of the person cared for. Any person rendering emergency care shall have the duty to place the injured person under the care of a physician, nurse, or other person qualified to care for such person as soon as possible and to obey the instructions of such qualified person.

153-A:31 Liability Limited
Any person who, in good faith and without compensation, renders emergency care by the use of an automatic external defibrillator shall not be liable for civil damages for any acts or omissions unless the acts or omissions were grossly negligent or willful an wanton. Any person, association, corporation or other organization that acquires and maintains an automatic external defibrillator for emergency care shall not be liable for civil damages other than for gross negligence or willful and wanton acts or omissions. This section shall not limit civil liability protection provided by any other law.

I currently have American Red Cross CPR certification. What is the difference?

The American Heart Association certification you will receive from McGregor will last for 2 years while Red Cross certification lasts only 1 year. Apart from this there are no technical differences.

How long is the class?

The AHA Heartsaver AED course we teach can be completed during a single afternoon session. We will work with your and your school to coordinate a training time that meets your needs. We have held and can hold trainings during professional developments days, after school, during vacations or at any time you feel would work best.

Who will teach the class?

We have a very large corps or AHA certified CPR and AED instructors with years of teaching experience. All of our instructors are also nationally registered EMT’s who have performed CPR in the line of duty. Our lead instructors also have many years of teaching experience ranging from the elementary school through college. They also are certified by the state of NH as Emergency Medical Services Instructors.

Do you bring the materials?

We will bring all of the materials needed to teach the class. This includes all manikins and AED's necessary so that every staff member can have hands on practice. We ask only that you provide a space large enough for all of the students to participate in.

How many people can you teach at one time?

From 8-80 we can teach them all. Whether you want to certify a small group at time or your entire school we can accommodate your needs. We have over 20 AHA certified instructors we can bring to your school.

Do you attend school health days/fairs?

Yes. If you are interested in having us attend a health day or fair please contact the CPR Manger at least 6 weeks in advance of the event with the details. Also, if you would like to have the CPR Manager come to your school to talk with you or your principal more about the CPR Safe program fell free to call and request a visit.

Do you make presentations to administrators/school boards?

We are more than happy to talk with whomever about the importance of CPR and AED training. Our goal as a volunteer, non-profit educational institution is to ensure increased public safety as well as public health awareness. If we can fulfill this mission by simply taking with your school administrators or school board we will gladly do so.

Yes. Please contact the CPR Manger for presentation material and information on the CPR Safe program. Remember, we are available to visit your school/district to talk with you and whomever you else may be interested.
