The NREMT Computer Based Test
Note: The steps below are based on the experience of our many EMT students who have registered for National Registry exam. Although we have endeavored to make sure that these steps are comprehensive, the ultimate source for information can be obtained from the National Registry of EMTs. They can be contacted at (614) 888-4484 or through the National Registry website.
We recommend beginning these steps 3 to 4 weeks before you plan to test.
Step 1: Create Your Account (skip this step if you already have an account with the National Registry)
- Go to www.nremt.org
- Click on “Create New Account” (below the blue bar at the top left corner of the NREMT home page).
Tip! Enter your name in the appropriate boxes exactly as it appears on the identification (usually your drivers license) that you will use when taking your Practical Exam and Computer Based Tests. Failure to enter your name identically may result in your being denied access to the testing site.
Tip! Under the “State Office Role” section select, “Not Applicable.”
Step 2: Login
After you have completed Step 1, login with your username and password.
Step 3: Manage Your Account Information
After logging into the website but before registering to test, you must edit your NREMT “profile.”
- Click on “Manage your Profile” (on the left hand side of the screen.)
- Complete all the information in the Personal Account Information fields as prompted.
- Click save at the bottom of the form.
Tip! Enter your name in the appropriate boxes exactly as it appears on the identification (usually your drivers license) that you will use when taking your Practical Exam and Computer Based Test. Failure to enter your name directly may result in your being denied access to the testing site.
Tip! We recommend using a permanent mailing and email address. Remember that if either of these change you will need to update your National Registry profile.
Step 4: Create a New Application
- Click on “Create a New Application” to apply to take your exam.
- Select the application level appropriate to your class.
Tip! Be sure to review the Personal Information Summary – if any items are incorrect, you can make corrections by clicking on “Manage your Profile.”
Tip! To locate your EMS Program information select, “List of EMS Education Programs.” You will need to choose your state and then your EMS Instructor’s name.
Step 5: Pay Application Fee<
Tip! DO NOT PAY FEE UNTIL YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE COURSE. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS!
- To pay your fee click on “Check Application Status” (on the left hand side of the screen.)
- Click on “Application Payment”
- Enter proper payment information.
- Payment Options: You can pay by credit/debit online or print a money order tracking slip for mailing your money order to the NREMT.
Tip! You will not receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) (which allows you to schedule your exam) until payment has been received and your course instructor has certified you as having passed the class.
Step 6: Check to See if You Are Approved to Take Your Exam
To check to see if you have been approved to take the exam login to the National Registry website:
- Click on “Candidate Services”.
- Click on “Application Status”.

A link to “Print ATT Letter” will appear when:
- You have successfully competed your EMT course and your instructor has certified your completion on the NREMT website.
- You have completed steps 1-5 above.
Using this link, you should print your “Authorization to Test” which will contain detailed instructions about how to schedule your Computer Based Test (CBT.)
Tip! If you do not have the “Print ATT Letter” link then some part of the authorization process has not been completed. Review steps 1-5 above to ensure that you have not missed anything.
Tip! If you see “Submitted’ next to “Course Completion Verification”, this means the NREMT has submitted your information to the program you indicated, and is waiting for authorization from the program indicating that you have completed the course. If you have completed all parts of your application and see this message then contact your EMT course instructor to make sure they have verified your successful completion of the EMT course.
Step 7: Print the ATT Letter to Schedule Your Exam
- If you see the link “Print ATT Letter”, click on the link.
- Scroll down to see if the “ATT Letter” appears.
- Print and follow the instructions in your ATT Letter.
Step 8: Call Pearson VUE to Schedule Your Exam
- Your ATT Letter will contain the Pearson VUE phone number to call to schedule your examination.
- Your ATT Letter will also include other important information you should read carefully!
Tips to Avoid Delays:
- You can reschedule your exam up to 24 hours in advance by calling Pearson VUE at 1(866)673-6896 or visiting the Pearson VUE website. If you fail to appear for your exam, you will have to complete a new application and pay another application fee!
